Elan "30-Second" ski reviews: new for 2008

GSX Race
This can be confusing. Previously, the GSX Race has been an actual F.I.S. legal 21m GS ski. Now that designation fills none other than the legendary Ripstick slot and the Ripstick is no more. Still a great frontside carving machine.

Speedwave 12
This ski, described perfectly by one tester as "Great frontside carver, lots of energy and very responsive," will probably more suit those who are not involved in citizen racing, but who are focused on carving and spend most of the time on the groomed.

Speed Magic
Our female test skiers fell in love with this ski. Analogue to the 12, the Magic really does seem magic. Fast, smooth, precise, easy, relatively forgiving and competent in virtually any terrain save truly steep and deep.

Wave Magic
While supposedly a step down from the Speed Magic, the Wave scored nearly as well, although it has a slightly lower speed limit and is a bit more forgiving. Still, it may well be worth a comparison demo test.

Magfire 10
Solid, "middle of the trail" cruiser with some off-piste capability. Good for skill-building, relaxed cruising, training camps. Tricky at serious speed. Very light, yet still smooth. Standard top skin.

Magfire 14
This is the ski that some are calling, incorrectly, the Magma. The major change in this Magfire group is beef; the ski is heavier and has slightly less shape. This has transformed the character of these Mag's; they have lost some of the agility for which Elan has been renowned, making the skis more damp, slightly less responsive and more forgiving, especially in broken snow. Attention Magfire fans—please do not buy these skis without demo; they are really different from older versions.
